Lumen

Thanks to various youtube treats, such as eating chips to Snake Eater, to the ever weirder and weirder imagery used for Eleven Tigers’ Stableface, we decided it was about time to make some videos of our own.

So, like every aspect of the label, we hunted for someone with skill, finesse and an innate talent for creating atmospheres and journeys.

Our searches led us to Lumen AV, an audio visual artist with an eye and ear for beauty, who just happens to like what we do too. Lumen has cut his teeth on providing visuals from small clubs to the largest festivals (he did some marathon sets at Glastonbury this year).
He is also the man behind the visuals for some of our club nights and Eleven Tigers latest project ‘111‘  and we are indebted to him for creating some gorgeous video treats for us all.

Make sure you check out his blog for more visual and geek treats.

He is an absolute badman.

2 Floors Down

New website, Another new label.

2 Floors Down has been launched out of a desire to release dance centric, experimental live music from Soul Motive artists and beyond.

A label to capture the back street basement club atmosphere where the new, unheard and the established artists, bands, emcees and singers treat you to journeys through their most involving, intimate and progressive sounds.

Dubstep, Broken Beat, House, Psyche Rock, Folk, Soul, Drum and Bass, Grime, Hiphop, no genre restrictions, just live music.

We’re always striving to bring you the highest quality product we can and being vinyl enthusiasts, each release will be available not just digitally through the standard stores (Juno, Beatport, iTunes, etc), but thanks to the good people at DubStudio, we can provide unique extremely limited edition dubplates with artwork up to a full month before the full digital release (which is included at the time of purchase).

To set it all off and bring our dark Bristolian cellar club to life, comic artist Betty Black has created a series of beautiful characters in burlesque settings for each release. From the sexy to the downright macabre, few artists have the style, emotive capacity and sense of humour Ms.Black displays and it’s an honour to have her commit her own provocative creations to ours.

Who better to launch the label than the king of live drums and progressive melodies, Coleco. The Patience EP showcases his inherent ability to create hypnotic grooves with eastern inspired inflections. The feel of modern day isolation in Patience with it’s cutting percussion, incredible synth work and emotive vocals from Victoria Klewin is testament to Coleco’s skills as song writer and producer. Breathwork and Under display the prodigious skill in percussion and progression. And as an extra special treat, ‘Train Ticket’ forthcoming on Coleco’s debut album due on Soul Motive in the near future. Due for release in september, DubStudio dubplates are available to order now with full artwork from the shop.

New look website and a couple new labels

Things ain’t what they used to be.

You may have noticed things have changed round here, our esteemed friends at ‘All That Good Stuff‘ have designed a brand new website to get Soul Motive rolling again. Have a look around, you can stream all of our releases from the Soundcloud player in the top right, navigate the website from links on the left. There’s even more exciting features in store to come and alongside our constant updates of what’s hot in the music world, come back and get involved.

We know a lot of our regular fans have been wondering what the hell we’ve been doing this year. After moving distributor twice, dealing with a few legal and financial wrangles and then making some executive decisions (diamond studded nike air maxs for me and adam was a good choice), we’re back and with a whole load of material to release.

The first of which is a new side project for us, Soul Motive White.

As the name suggests, white labels for those hype tunes with perhaps not the cleanest samples on them. They’ll be unmarked save for the ‘Soul Motive White’ logo in the shops, and you’ll only be able to get them on mp3 and find out direct from here who made them.

First up rising star Presk with the beserk, progressive ‘Jump’ backed with scene stalwart Sines with the seductive ‘Secrets’.

Have a listen to the tracks yourself here.

Aaaagagagagagagagaa

Buggsy has become somewhat of a local legend. His flow and content are unique and I don’t think there’s anyone quite like him out there. He’s been around for a while and despite a few false starts (E.P.s never getting released etc.), his new album is exactly as good and imaginative as we all hoped it would be. Sparse guest appearances and remixes from Jehst, Alys Blaze and Gemmy, let the album deliver a concentrated Buggsy album as possible and it’s the better for it. Some great productions and stand out tracks such as Pure Gas, Bris Ting, Connect the Spdif and This is Our life, really set this debut album off. Cannot recommend you check this enough.

Album is available on iTunes : http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/the-great-escape/id436207159

Broadcasting loud and clear.

On Tuesday, a good friend of mine came round to watch Transformers: The Movie (80′s cartoon) and Black Dynamite (long live the mo’ bitches variety pack). He brought with him a vinyl copy of his new album due out next week. Broadcast by Hyetal, if you like any of his previous releases (Soul Motive, Reduction and Punch Drunk) or any 80′s Blade Runner esque sound tracks, you should most definitely check this out.

Combining real textural, catchy synths, Hyetal’s trademark rhythms and beautiful vocals from Alison Garner, the album really shows off Hyetal’s colourful and emotive composition.  Searchlight being a stand out example, wonderful sounds you can practically feel (alligator scales and sandy glass in particular for some odd reason) and an involving, heads down vibe. The album really does feel like an evolution and refinement of his sound following on from the superb Phoenix on Orca Records (which is included on the CD release but not the vinyl).

Despite living down the bloody road, I have yet to catch Hyetal’s live performance in a club, but you can get a taste for it from his Boiler Room appearance. And if you’re in Bristol there’s rumour of an Idle Hands in store performance to celebrate the label launch, so keep checking for details, I’ll post when I know.

You can of course still get Hyetal’s excellent release on Soul Motive from our shop, I think we even have a couple of vinyl in stock; ultra extra specially limited though.

Broadcast is set for full release next week on Monday the 9th of May. I highly recommend you check it out!

Coleco delivering the goods.

DJ Mag asked Soul Motive to provide a podcast showing the new material we have upcoming. We in turn asked Coleco and he in turn got some Vietnamese sweat shop to produce it. Okay the last bit is a lie.

The mix contains forthcoming material from Coleco’s album due later this year, our new sister label Two Floors Down (which we will start piping up about very soon) and of course forthcoming material from Soul Motive itself.

A Future Without…

There’s a label, half based in Bristol, half in London, called ‘A Future Without’, they have put out some superb music with a great musical variety and ethics. More importantly they have a distinct sound, a great sound at that, they seem to capture the sounds of Bristol gone by as well as current and forward. We know about Kahn smashing up things recently with Punch Drunk, his release and collaborations with Vessel under the name of Baby Yaga are hot as well. Well worth checking out (and you’ll hear a definite hark back to a 90′s Bristol sound:

52 Commercial Road is a new name to me, but the release 33 Kadmar had me hooked, riding the line of progressive psychedelic rock, with an underlying menace and anger, without sounding dated. Proper ‘Post Rock’. Great work:

This all came out last year, a label well deserved of cranking the stereo and going through their catalog one evening. Throughly looking forward to the future releases myself.

Idle Hands reviving Bristol’s record shop selection

A friend of mine, Chris Farrell, has embarked on a scary yet commendable endeavour of opening a new record shop to fill the whole that Rooted’s closure. We’re all vinyl lovers and Rooted was the spot. The community that these two things created was what got me into music. You can be damn sure we’re backing Chris’ ‘Idle Hands’ shop. Opens on the 25th of February (day before my birthday coincidentally) and is found at 74 Stokes Croft, Bristol.

Make sure you check it out:
